The Best Workout Songs For Heavy Lifting

James Maynard Keenan

Maynard, more tours and less wine!

In order to come up with a list of the best workouts songs, it might be prudent just to take a minute and consider what your workouts are like. I run in a pack where everyone just wants to be stronger. Brute strength, bigger muscles, and surprise surprise, lots of us have more testosterone than brains. The taste in the powerlifting and strength crowds tends to run towards angry, heavy music. When I workout, I’m usually in the mood for something similar. I like to get revved up, even though I don’t stalk around the gym scowling and yelling and slapping my own face.

That kind of music probably isn’t going to work if you’re in the middle of a step aerobics class. I wouldn’t want to hear it if I was running either. So keep in mind, this list is what I like, what I’d listen to in the middle of a heavy weight training session. If it sounds like we’ve got anything in common, read on.

Also: I tend to favor longs songs because I have long workouts. It makes me smile when I can listen to a Tool song and realize that I’ve been deadlifting for 10 solid minutes during Pushit.

  • Pushit by Tool
  • Eulogy by Tool
  • Silenced by Mudvayne
  • Bitter Peace by Slayer
  • South of Heaven by Slayer
  • Heretic Anthem by Slipknot
  • Threee Nil by Slipknot
  • Right Now by Korn
  • Evolution by Korn
  • Just about anything from Metallica
  • Solve et Coagula by Mudvayne
  • Raining Blood by Slayer
  • The entire Get Some album by Snot
  • 7 Words by the Deftones
  • Burn it Down by Finger Death Punch

I’ll leave it there for now so y’all can add to the list. If this was enjoyable, you might get a kick out of my post about the worst songs for the gym.

Vicarious (tool-10k days) is one of my favorite heavy lifting tunes.
