Poll: Songs You Hate?

Recently we had a fun discussion about songs that affect us and remind of us places and times.

Today let’s do the opposite. I’ll start. Here are a few songs I hate so badly that I shiver every time I even think of them. They are, of course, also the songs most likely to get stuck in my head.

  • Heal The World by Michael Jackson
  • You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet by Bachman Turner Overdrive
  • Stay (Just A Little Bit Longer) by The Chantels
  • Tom Sawyer by Rush
  • Everything by Limp Bizkit

That’s it for now. How about you?

Blaspheme, Josh! How can you hate anything by BTO? Stop it!

The worst song EVER is Wildfire. I don’t even know who sang it, and it is so horrible, I won’t even look it up for fear it would get stuck in my head. “She ran calling Wildfire”. Gross.

I really liked RUSH back in the day, but now that I think about it, that is a bad song.

    • Josh Hanagarne November 2, 2010, 9:34 am

Wildfire is by Michael Martin Murphy. I think that song is hilarious. neigh! (That’s a horse whinnying for you)

  • Bob November 2, 2010, 8:18 am

Gotta disagree with you on Tom Sawyer, but I can get on board with all the others.

Thanks to you, I think I have “You aint’ seen nothin’ yet” stuck in my head. Luckily I run a one person library, and I can rock it out of my head.

    • Josh Hanagarne November 2, 2010, 9:33 am

Bob, I actually like about 99% of what Rush has done, but that song…I can’t. And you’re welcome.

  • ami November 2, 2010, 9:09 am

Crying – with Don Mclean – or any song featuring a guy (or gal, but for some reason the guys bother me more) sobbing and feeling sorry for himself because a girl (guy) left ’em. The refrain Cry – y – y – y – ing! Over you! Cry – y – y -y – ing! Over you! grates on my nerves like a blinding headache.

Should have named the song “Whining.” UGH!

  • Carol November 2, 2010, 9:35 am

Womanizer by Brittany Spears. What I Am by Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians.

  • Boris November 2, 2010, 9:45 am

Muskrat Love – Captain & Tennille
    Mmmbop – Hanson

I don’t know if I “hate” these songs, but man they are annoying and stay with you like a bad aftertaste.

The best thing to do with an “earworm” (the definitive term for a tune stuck in your mind) is replace it with a favorite tune played a couple of times. Usually works.

  • Kim B November 2, 2010, 4:47 pm

“Eternal Flame” by the Bengals, for the sole reason that this song was playing the last time I ever saw my biological father who is a complete piece of rubbish.

For less serious reasons, I hate the song “Bitch” by Meredith Brooks and “MacArthur’s Park” by…I have no idea who it’s by…a quick wiki search tells me Richard Harris sang it in 1968. Who the hell leaves cake (with green icing, no less) in the rain, any way???

    • Jodi Kaplan November 3, 2010, 7:30 am

      MacArthur Park was Donna Summer.

      • Kim November 3, 2010, 8:01 am

That would give me even more reason to hate it…but sadly, as a nerdy kid I listened to the “oldies” station growing up…and I distinctly remember a man singing the song…whining about the “sweet green icing flowing down”…

        From Wikipedia:
“Richard Harris was the first to record the song, in 1968. It was subsequently covered by numerous artists. Among the best known covers of the song are Donna Summer’s disco arrangement from 1978 and Waylon Jennings’ version recorded in 1969.”

        …and this entertaining analysis…

  • Tim November 2, 2010, 8:02 pm

    Hi Josh:

Great topic…I’ve got two. “American Pie” by Don McLean and Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

  • Big Will November 2, 2010, 10:41 pm

My only limiting factor here is time-
Any and all songs by Good Charlotte

That new song with Eminem and Rhianna

Favorite songs I have not heard in too long:
    Super Mario Brothers theme music

    Donna, Ritchie Valens

Josh- my Paypal was hacked. Must find alternative means for The Knot.

  • cinderkeys November 2, 2010, 11:26 pm

“Ironic,” because ironically, Alannis Morisette doesn’t know how to use the word.

  • Pim November 3, 2010, 2:07 am

My heart will go on by Celine Dion. Hate the movie, hate the song

    • cinderkeys November 3, 2010, 1:52 pm

I hate that song too, but y’know, the lyrics aren’t terrible. Mostly I hate what Celine Dion did with them. The melody isn’t great either.

One of these days, Cinder Bridge (my band) may cover “My Heart Will Go On” just so we can fix it. 🙂

  • Kris Wragg November 3, 2010, 4:39 am

I hate any of those terrible pop songs that seem to be laced with cocaine, because whilst you know they are really bad for you you can’t help but get addicted to them and get stuck in your head.

Anything like Lady GaGa and all that other trash.

  • Todd November 3, 2010, 6:15 am

I can’t think of any songs that I really “hate”. However, there are certainly bands/singers that I can’t stand. Pretty much any artist that thinks that I give a crap about their political/social views, regardless of where they stand, bugs the crap out of me and ipso facto (slip that one into a conversation today) makes me not like their music. A few examples: System of a Down, U2, Neil Young, Pearl Jam, etc.

    • cinderkeys November 3, 2010, 2:34 pm

Does the same go for artists/bands who promote a nonpartisan cause? Like raising awareness for skin cancer prevention or child abuse or whatnot?

  • LDGirl November 3, 2010, 6:30 am

I have to confess to only knowing two of your ‘bottom five’ – on name only at least – perhaps that makes me lucky!

I have a few guaranteed cringers:
‘The Power of Love’ – Jennifer Rush – guaranteed to send me rushing out of the room
‘Move Closer’ – Phyllis Nelson – Horatio would have blown it to smithereens
‘Love is All Around’ -Wet, Wet, Wet – crap, crap, crap
‘I Do It For You’ – Bryan Adams – robbing from the world of music to give me the screaming abdabs

Hmm, there seems to be a theme emerging here…

I’m also with Pim on ‘My Heart Will Go On’ – much like your horrendous song, Cel…

  • ellen November 3, 2010, 7:15 am

    Flirtin’ with Disaster–Molly Hatchet

  • delta waters November 3, 2010, 7:19 am

ok…are we posting songs we hate or songs we easily get stuck in our brains?’
Hate: Driver’s Seat by Sniff n’ the Tears (gawd what a name)
American Pie by Don McClean (i’m with you on that Kim B)
    Sweet Home Alabama by Skynyrd
Pena Colada Song by Rupert Holmes
    Pachelbel’s Cannon in D
    Ear worms:
    Iron Man by Ozzy
    Bandoliers by Them Crooked Vultures
    anything by the Beach Boys
…and all of the above songs I hate.
p.s. Rush rocks…saw them 2 summers ago and they still have it.
p.p.s now Wildfire is in my head. thanks Ami.

    • Josh Hanagarne November 3, 2010, 1:30 pm

      Wildfire! Yes!

      • Jen H November 3, 2010, 2:30 pm

Is there an antidote for that song? Or should I say anti-venom?
I wonder if Mr. Murphy hates that song as much as we do. I am embarrassed to say that I probably can sing along to every. single. word. When that song came out I thought it was the most romantic thing I had ever heard!
That is until I heard Kenny Rogers sing “You light up my life”
I’m pretty sure he did a cover of Unchained Melody too.

  • Jodi Kaplan November 3, 2010, 7:28 am

When I was in college, the school radio station had a “bad song” festival; an entire day playing one awful song after another. My roomie and I spent the whole day coming up with one rotten song after another. It was bad (but funny too).

Muskrat Love is definitely up there (down there?), as is Sugar Sugar by the Archies

  • Justin Matthews November 3, 2010, 8:43 am

There are so many songs that fall into this category, just lately almost anything by freaking Adam Lambert is a problem and that stupid camera song from Go Diego Go that my daughter is addicted too is just insidious.

    • Josh Hanagarne November 3, 2010, 1:29 pm

Justin, I know that you spend your nights dancing around in an Adam Lambert wig. This is a safe place. Please write a guest post for me about it, including pics.

      • Justin Matthews November 3, 2010, 2:23 pm

Not the wig! he does have some nice jackets… Come on over, we will get wild with “What do you want from me”

  • Cathy N. November 3, 2010, 11:37 am

There are some songs on this list that I quite enjoy and some that I despise. One that hasn’t been mentioned, that many people seem to like but that induces hives and nausea in me, is “Unchained Melody.” Another is “Here, There and Everywhere.”

  • Jen H November 3, 2010, 12:07 pm

Since Muskrat Love was already mentioned I’ll go with
    Copacabana by Barry Manilow

And “The Picture” by Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow: I mean really, you’ve been apart for 3 days and you’re already giving up and getting under the covers with someone else?

    • Josh Hanagarne November 3, 2010, 1:26 pm

      • Cathy N. November 4, 2010, 9:03 am

But I do enjoy “Star Wars Cantina.”

  • Louise December 8, 2010, 3:12 pm
