Hi Josh .. that was so interesting .. and I loved the two quotes you gave .. "there's no off switch to adaptation" and "the body is always learning ..."

It looks like we all picked up on the breathing - as that helps us all at all times, especially if we are paying attention to it ..

One off topic quest - how do you put the audio into your posts? What programme do you use? Also it was very clear and you spoke really well .. I was very interested ..

Many thanks - Hilary

As soon as you said the part about functioning in a continual state of oxygen deprivation, I thought of my husband. After his accident in 2006, his left lower lung is filled with scar tissue and his vocal cords were damaged from the vebtilator tube.
I have grown accostomed to the way this makes him breathe and talk (think :godfather rasp, whispery voice), but when new people come around I tell them to let him know if they cannot hear or understand him. Sometimes he is so used to talking without enough air, that he forgets to take a deep breath to help project his voice. His body has grown accostomed to this state.
I am going to go home and have him listen to this and see if we can start practice breathing excercises together, to make it more natural for him to take a deep breath.
Thank you for your inspiration and congrats on the book!

Oh, Josh, thank you so, so much for this. A regular mindfulness/meditation practice and Cognitive Behavior Therapy have both been huge for my hubby in managing his tics. And I have discovered that body awareness is so incredibly healing for all sorts of issues... I practice Nia and have learned to really listen to my body and make adjustments accordingly. I especially loved your recording. Your authenticity shines beautifully in all you do.

Brilliant, Josh. I hope the focus on breathing helps you to cure yourself. How exactly are you training breath? Do you use pranayama breathing?

Pranayama is a key part of my training, and I can definitely feel a difference. I don't have tourettes, but I find that taking just 10 minutes to focus on breath mellows me out for hours.

Focusing awareness on our body habits. Consciously steering our parts in the directions we want them to go. Repeating and repeating and repeating until it becomes natural.

Excellent advice, whether or not you wrestle with Tourette's. I found myself straightening up and paying attention to my spine as I listened. Wondering if sitting straight will improve my character, as mom always implied.
