Barbara Kingsolver, “The Other One”

I overheard someone today. A woman. She said, in a loud, clear voice:

“No, I mean Barbara Kingsolver. Y0u know. The other one.”

Do any of you geniuses have the faintest idea of what she might have meant? The other what?

Not claiming to be a genius, but often find myself wondering what other people have going on in their lives as well. Here’s my guess:

The Other patron had mistakenly mentioned another Southern woman writer. Let’s say…Sue Monk Kidd. After doing some searching both ladies have contributed to an anthology. If someone likes The Secret Life of Bees they may also enjoy The Bean Trees. Finally, if you search for Kingsolver on Amazon the related search listed is Sue Monk Kidd.

Undoubtably, someone has a better answer. I just thought I would take a stab at it. I am still wondering about the couple I passed at lunch a few days ago. The man at the table said, “…So we decided to fly down to Guantanamo…”

Were you overhearing half of a telephone conversation? Maybe they were talking about authors or books. One person could have mentioned reading a book by an author named Barbara. Two barbara authors come to mind…Delinksy and the OTHER one, Kingsolver. That works, eh?

Then again. Barbara Park was pretty popular in our house for a few years.

Hm. I’m thinking of Barbara Kingsolver’s novels as opposed to her Animal, Vegetable, Miracle. If someone were looking for books in the locavore theme, they might look for Kingsolver or Alice Waters.

This thread is getting fun to read!

I was thinking the line was similar to Daisy’s thinking – fiction versus non. Could be older versus more recent Kingslover.
