Leiningen Versus The Ants!

Hi all, an offhand remark from a friend this morning reminded me of one of my favorite short stories. Not quite horror, but very intense, Leiningen Versus The Ants was written by Carl Stephenson.

It’s about a crazed ant attack on a plantation, and the only man who could stop the madness, Leiningen!

Read it here. Always makes me smile.

Favorite/most memorable moment–when the ants actually BUILD a bridge with their bodies to get across a creek/stream to keep munching at the crops. Epic!

“Critical situations first become crises,” he explained to his men, “when oxen or women get excited ”

Love being lumped together with oxen. Good story, I was scrolling pretty fast at the end.

I know! I’m sure there are other animals that fall into the category, but women are obviously the worst. Crisis after crisis!

    Hi Josh,

I’m sure you know this and have heard the shows many times, but just in case not, “Leiningen Versus The Ants” was adapted into old radio shows a few times. The broadcast with William Conrad is the one I’m most familiar with. It can be hard to find a clear, strong recording but the link on this page isn’t bad–

I listen to old radio shows as a hobby. I’ve written about it here on my blog —

Thanks for your great site, Josh.

    Best wishes,
    Ron

I actually didn’t know that, how great. So glad you told me.
