Goldfinch Update!

Hi all,

I have strictly rationed off my reading of Donna Tartt’s The Goldfinch. I raced through about the first 70% of it, according to my Kindle. And now I’ve slowed it down and am reading 1 measly % each day. I just can’t stand for it to end.

In the meantime, I’ve read Bad Behavior by Mary Gaitskill, which is a disturbing short story collection about weird people doing weird things to each other. Also, Delicate, Edible Birds by Lauren Groff, another short story collection. Beautiful writing!

I’m reading an e-galley of The Martian by Andy Weird, which, even though I haven’t seen Gravity, reminds me of what the book version would probably be. It’s really intense and sooooooo good.

My favorite thing I’ve found online in a while is this post about Jonathan Franzen by Mallory Ortberg.

And that’s it for now. What are you all reading?

Just started Morrissey’s Autobiography, finishing my second reading of Blood Meridian, and ready to start A Winter’s Tale, since I heard it will be a film to be released in February. Not sure about the film, though. I saw the trailer and it looks a bit boring.

It’s very well written, lyrical and poetic and touching. Of course that’s the section about his childhood. I haven’t gotten past that part yet. I’m surprised at how accomplished his writing is.

    Still slowly savoring The Goldfinch.

Wrapping up I Wear the Black Hat.

    Still enjoying The Humans.

Also slowly enjoying A Sport and a Pastime by James Salter (beautiful and “Frenchy”).

Making my way through The Roundhouse.

Loving The Broom of the System to death!

If you find Bad Behavior “disturbing,” then that is really saying something.

P.S. The Franzen article was hilarious.

The Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert. So far really liking it.

Today I read The Recess Queen (deep stuff, I know) to a bunch of first graders today. I’ve learned than when I sub for this particular class, I can bribe them with stories. They’ll do anything for stories. After their favorite, The Recess Queen, comes Yes Day and then Thank You, Mr. Falker. Lol. The funny thing is that I enjoy it just as much as the kids do.

Ohhh I have both The Goldfinch and The Martian on my soon-to-be-read pile. Glad to hear you’re enjoying both!

I get it about The Goldfinch. I’m excited to turn every page and yet keep putting it down because, as you say, I don’t want it to end. Seems like such a gift to be so totally enamored of a book.

Currently reading Behind the Scenes at the Museum by Kate Atkinson. Very good. Also recently finished a good book you might be familiar with, something about a really strong librarian?
