I Write Like Algorithm

Hey all, this is kind of lam, but everyone’s been playing with I Write Like and I couldn’t resist.

Click on that link, paste in a block of text–you can use a blog post, book page, or just type whatever you want–and it will tell you whose style you most resemble. So far, I’ve yet to see one female author pop up.

After pasting in the introduction to The World’s Strongest Librarian, I was told, happily, that I write like William Gibson. So, while it’s obviously broken for everyone else, I’m going to pretend that I’m as brilliant as William Gibson for a while.

Give it a try, tell me your answer in the comments (please)

I copied and pasted a book review I’d posted on Goodreads. (I’m just a regular reader, not a writer in any way). I got H.P.Lovecraft

  • Gypsy June 18, 2013, 4:59 am

I write like Cory Doctorow…. never heard of him.

  • Gypsy June 18, 2013, 5:03 am

    And…. david foster wallace ….

  • Don June 18, 2013, 5:33 am

I knew there was a reason I liked your writing: I got William Gibson as well.

  • Eric West | Friendship Society June 18, 2013, 5:39 am

Cory Doctorow for one of my blogs. I looked him up, he’s co-editor of Boing Boing. For another of my blogs it came up as George Orwell.

  • Don June 18, 2013, 5:57 am

I got an equal amount of William Gibson, Douglas Adams, and Cory Doctorow. Apparently I can’t decide on a writing style.

  • Nona Martin Stuck June 18, 2013, 6:07 am

Apparently, even though I’m a southern woman, I write like Kurt Vonnegut, bless his heart.

  • Jack M June 18, 2013, 6:08 am

I write like Kurt Vonnegut, and I have absolutely no idea why.

  • Jeroen June 18, 2013, 6:16 am

George Orwell. And I’m not even a native speaker!

Probably because my text was about politics.

  • June Seghni June 18, 2013, 6:50 am

did this come from a scifi website?

  • Jon June 18, 2013, 7:13 am

It seems like a rather limited selection of authors. I came up as H.P. Lovecraft. I then took an excerpt from Elizabeth Gilbert and she, too, came up as H.P. Lovecraft.

I think that’s a problem with writers today. Everyone wants to be the next H.P. Lovecraft.

  • Jennifer June 18, 2013, 7:54 am

I write like Cory Doctorow. Hmm 🙂

    • Josh Hanagarne June 18, 2013, 8:13 am

So does my friend Spencer, and you two couldn’t be less alike in your writing. It’s a sham!

  • Sue Garvey June 18, 2013, 8:03 am

David freakin’ Foster Wallace. My day and quite possibly my life has been made. Not sure I agree, but cool.

  • Daisy June 18, 2013, 8:54 am

First time: Cory Doctorow. Second: Neil Gaiman.

I still haven’t seen any female authors. Do I write like a man, or are there no females in the algorithm?

  • Jack M June 18, 2013, 9:06 am

I put in an excerpt from Slaughterhouse Five, and it said I write like Kurt Vonnegut, so there must be something valid about the algorithm.

  • Gustavo June 18, 2013, 9:11 am

I write like Mike Tyson. Is he any good?

    • Josh Hanagarne June 18, 2013, 9:31 am

He’s the greatest writer of all time, as if you didn’t know.

  • Nona Martin Stuck June 18, 2013, 9:19 am

But, Jack, we can only access its validity if that’s done a number of times, perhaps with alternating samples from Vonnegut, then someone else, then Vonnegut again. Even then….

    • Jack M June 18, 2013, 9:23 am

OK, I put in two paragraphs from The Old Man and the Sea and it said I write like James Joyce, LOL!!

  • Monika June 18, 2013, 9:48 am

hahaha I got H.P. Lovecraft which is just hilarious: at a party this past weekend I was excited about a Cthulhu pie my friend made!

    • Josh Hanagarne June 18, 2013, 9:48 am

Everyone is getting HP Lovecraft but me.

      • Nona Martin Stuck June 18, 2013, 9:50 am

No, Josh, no just you. I’m only getting Vonnegut. I was hoping for Alice Monroe but I don’t think that’s going to happen.

        • Josh Hanagarne June 18, 2013, 9:54 am

So far, I don’t think there’s been one female author.

          • Sue Garvey June 18, 2013, 10:02 am

I spread the fun at work today and one person got Margaret Atwood and another got Anne Rice, so there are definitely women represented.

  • Janice W. June 18, 2013, 11:27 am

I just wrote a little paragraph, and voila, ‘I write like
Leo Tolstoy’. So I will say…Wow, who knew.

    • Josh Hanagarne June 18, 2013, 12:34 pm

Bravo. It’s been too long since we’ve seen your like.

  • Michelle June 18, 2013, 2:39 pm

I pasted in my new book that I’m in the process of editing, and it said I write like Neil Gaiman. Since that’s the kind of vibe I was going for in this book, that’s perfect!!

  • Karen June 18, 2013, 3:49 pm

omg i got the bard!! too funny!! all i ever write are business emails.

  • Cathy Lim June 23, 2013, 9:08 pm

I tried it and got Vladimir Nabokov. Huh.

  • Rebecca June 29, 2013, 6:03 am

Stephanie Meyer. I’m going to go paper cut my wrists now. I was hoping for something a bit more dramatic like Plath…
