Bookmobile Book Tour! Would you be Interested in Helping Next Year?

Hi everyone, today I’m asking for your help and/or feedback on something.

My book is going to come out in May of 2013.  I will spend a couple of months of the summer working on official publicity stuff for Gotham Books, but after that I am planning on hitting the road on my own for what will, depending on the response and my financial situation, be either a mini- or mega-tour.

Here’s the thing: I’m only planning on doing library events, readings/signings in people’s homes, or book club meetings. This will be different than the typical tour and will give me a chance to meet people in a more intimate setting.

The goal is to to do 30 engagements in maybe 40 days.  I’ll give myself a couple of weekends off and add in a couple of days to drive longer distances.

Oh, that’s the other thing.  I love to drive and there’s a ton of this country I haven’t seen yet, so I’ll be on the road with a van full of my books.  Or maybe I’ll rent a bookmobile. Or make one.

And along the way, I’ll be looking for as many Tourette’s  Syndrome groups and special needs kids to meet with as possible.

So, here’s what I’m asking.

I need people who:

  • Might let me sleep on their couch
  • Could host a literary event in their home and round up friends to come — don’t consider this unless you have friends would would actually enjoy this
  • Have an in with the local library and could help me with the pitch
  • Have any sort of media contacts in their area, no matter how tenuous
  • Have any other ideas for other things I might try while on the road
  • Are part of any disabilities-related groups or organizations who would like to have me speak to them (free, of course, although I’d love to sell books while I’m there)

The purposes of this trip will be to sell books, meet people worth knowing, see the country, and have a good time.  That’s it.  If you think you could fit into any of that, I’d love to hear from you.

This is so early that it’s barely even in the planning stages.  It will be a monumental undertaking and I need to start mapping things out as early as possible.

If my media team sets up a packed schedule for me–and I hope they do–who knows what I’ll actually be up for once that’s done, but I want to try!

If you can help, or you have any ideas or suggestions, please let me know in the comments section.  Tell me where you’re at (geographically) and what you think you could help with, even if it’s just lending me your couch for a night.

thanks!

Josh

I’d have to work a little bit to see if I could come up with any resources or connections for you, but I can definitely offer a nice double futon sofa if you end up coming down my way to the Tampa Bay area.

Thanks Chris. You are now on the maybe-who-knows-we-ll-see list! I’ve never been to Florida, I hope we can work it out.

I’d love to see you if you make it to Florida. We’re in Orlando and have a sleeper sofa available.

    What a cool idea!

Josh, are you planning on touring north of the border at all? I’m in St. Albert, Alberta and through a variety of connections could set you up with an engagement, I’m sure. I’m a member of the Edmonton Down Syndrome Society and used to be on their board (my daughter has Ds) and as well the building I work in is attached to a city library – and I just happen to be friends with the director there. I also have connections to the local Autism society through some friends of ours. Sorry, I don’t know anyone in the Tourette’s groups around here though.

I’m sure if you were to do a tour up here we could arrange something for you!

Jason, I would love that and wouldn’t rule it out. I’m going to put you on the maybe list and see how it works when I actually get a map out.

I’m in Grinnell, Iowa, which is an hour from either Des Moines or Iowa City. I could offer a place to sleep, a slight in with the local library, and some media via the chamber of commerce. If it were during the start of the school year I’m sure the local college would send kids your way; otherwise there’s plenty of people in the town. We have a special needs daughter but we aren’t really hooked into any organizations yet, sorry!

Thanks Misty. You’re firmly in Maybeland. That’s a real spreadsheet.

Hey buddy, if you want to make your way to the middle west you can definitely crash at my place in Chicago.

    • Josh Hanagarne July 25, 2012, 12:15 pm

Casey, you might be too much of a hooligan for me…

  • Casey July 25, 2012, 9:35 pm

Hooligan?! I am old and boring, I promise. Don’t steal my Geritol and we will be fine.

Let me know if you get to the NE corner of Wisconsin – the Green Bay area or nearby. I’d love to meet you and buy your book!

This is an awesome idea! Put me and Kansas City on the DEFINITELY list! There are several library branches within a few miles of my house that I frequent often. I am sure I can get you an audience there. I will host a reading/book-signing at my house. I will start a book club if I need to. You can stay in the guest room for as long as you want. Bring it!

Hi Josh…I’m in Pittsburgh, PA and if you want to come here I’ll help you with any and all that I can. I know some people in a recruiting/placement consulting company for people with disabilities. No personal in at the library but my people know their people. Very small couch but reasonable spare room. Will see how many people I can muster for a reading in my house. Oh must love mutts though.
