Do you have any public speaking questions? I Still Want to Meet You All

This isn't me

I wanted to take today and open it up for any questions you might have about the speaking I’ve been doing, or about public speaking in general. I might have an answer. I might not. If not,  we can all speculate together and pretend we’re very cunning about subjects such as:

How to get speaking gigs, preferably paying ones.

How does the agent thing work?

How to prepare a speech.

How to market yourself at the event, especially if you hate marketing.

How to find new places to speak.

And so on and so forth forever amen.

Also, I want to meet as many of you as possible. Next year when the book publicity officially ramps up, I’ll be in a lot more places, so our odds of occupying the same room may improve.

Until then, just in case you’re going to be in these areas in the upcoming months, here’s where I’ll be speaking:

  • April 19, Minneapolis
  • May 3-4,  Spokane area
  • June 8-10,  Gettysburg
  • September 14, San Antonio

And there will be a few small local things as well.

How do you pick up your speaking gigs?

Tom, so far they’re 100% referrals. So I guess the lesson there, is, if you’re going to do it, make sure you do it well. I’ll be going back to Minneapolis for the second time in April. I imagine that a lot of in-demand speakers (I’m not in that group) get a ton of business simply going back to places they’ve spoken at before.

I have tried contacting a couple of Tourette’s related organizations in areas where I’m speaking, to see if I might sneak something else in for free while I’m in the area, but so far they’ve all said, “Oh, we’ll be at the other thing you’re going to.”
