More Non-Urgent but Awesome: A Recent Phone Book Tear

When people ask me why I like to work at the libray, the answers are always the same:

  • The groupies
  • The performance enhancing drugs
  • and the phone books I get to tear when we discard them

It had been a few months since I had tried, but yesterday I saw the “Greater Iowa” phone book looking at me and decided to try and tear it in half. Photo below:

When it’s easy, it’s easy and it happens fast. I was surprised I got it but happy to know I could still do it.
A word of advice to any of you who want to try this or are trying it: stop when you start missing. Meaning, if you’re straining at it, stop, take a day or two, rest, and then see how you feel.
When you’re doing bench press, you know when you’ve gone too far and the bar’s probably not going to come back up. With hands, lots of guys I see don’t realize that the same thing happens. There’s a point where you simply can’t pinch hard enough anymore. It’s just not as obvious as being stapled beneath a barbell.

    Absolutely, Josh! I tried some nail bending a few years ago and was enjoying it but abandoned it when I started working out my ‘whole body’ more. I’d like to get back into some hands work, I was amazed at how much of our strength really is dependent on our hands, it’s fascinating.
