Even though the English major in me screams that Stephen King’s writing isn’t lovely or “important,” I just don’t care. He knows how to tell a good story. And he has written some of my very favorite books. I will never forget the first time I read the opening scene of It as a kid. Or the first time I read The Stand and I realized that after 100 pages I couldn’t believe how lucky I felt to see that I still had such a long read ahead of me. Or this, or that, I could go on all day. But I won’t. Instead I’ll give you a list of my top 10 Stephen King books, based on how much I enjoyed them the first time I read them, and on how many times I have read them since.
- The Stand
- It
- Skeleton Crew
- Misery
- Four Past Midnight
- Nightmares and Dreamscapes
- On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft
- Salem’s Lot
- Night Shift
- Pet Sematary
Any one of these Top Stephen King books will give you a great glimpse of King’s work. If you like any one of these, you’ll probably like most or all of them.
