My Top 10 Stephen King Books

by Josh Hanagarne on March 5, 2011

night shift stephen kingEven though the English major in me screams that Stephen King’s writing isn’t lovely or “important,” I just don’t care. He knows how to tell a good story. And he has written some of my very favorite books. I will never forget the first time I read the opening scene of It as a kid. Or the first time I read The Stand and I realized that after 100 pages I couldn’t believe how lucky I felt to see that I still had such a long read ahead of me. Or this, or that, I could go on all day. But I won’t. Instead I’ll give you a list of my top 10 Stephen King books, based on how much I enjoyed them the first time I read them, and on how many times I have read them since.

  • The Stand
  • It
  • Skeleton Crew
  • Misery
  • Four Past Midnight
  • Nightmares and Dreamscapes
  • On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft
  • Salem’s Lot
  • Night Shift
  • Pet Sematary

Any one of these Top Stephen King books will give you a great glimpse of King’s work. If you like any one of these, you’ll probably like most or all of them.
